Mosaic Art Source - mosaic gold faqs

gold leaf tesserae (mosaic gold) - 24k gold-leaf tesserae are made up of a glass support layer (usually transparent, sometimes coloured) less than one centimetre thick. The 24k gold metal leaf is then sandwiched between the support and a thin protective glass layer (the cartellina). In tesserae the colour shade is determined by the purity of the metal, the thickness of the leaf, the colour, if any, of the cartellina and of the support.

Can mosaic gold be used on floors?
Yes, we have 2 mosaic golds made especially for use on floors; mosaic wavy gold 01011 & mosaic platinum gold 01020.
All Orsoni mosaic golds have a thin layer of glass over the 24k gold leaf to protect it but these 2 golds have a clear crystal base so that they may be applied gold face up or down.
Gold face down, the thicker layer of glass adds extra protection to allow for foot traffic without the loss of the brilliance of the 24k mosaic gold.
